It is estimated that 30 per cent of white men will suffer from androgenetic alopecia by the age of 30, up to 50 per cent by the age of 50 and up to 80 per cent by the age of 70 [1]. In recent years, the hair loss population has become progressively younger, with many starting to lose their hairline progressively at puberty.

With so many people suffering from hair loss these days, how can you keep your hair from going down the drain?

    Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved only two drugs for the treatment of hair loss, finasteride and minoxidil. However, these drugs exhibit side effects that can be discouraging. For example, the use of finasteride can cause postural hypotension, chills, atopic dermatitis, erythema, pruritus, sweating, susceptibility to colds, confusion, and decreased  dihydrotestosterone levels [2-3]. Long-term use of finasteride greatly increases the risk of sexual dysfunction in men and infertility and teratogenicity in women [4]. Side effects of minoxidil, on the other hand, include burning or itching sensation on the skin, feeling dry and straw-like around the treated area, lack of shiny hair, and hirsutism. In addition, minoxidil leads to the risk of hair loss recurrence once the drug is discontinued [5]. Therefore, the search for substances that have the ability to promote hair growth in a long-lasting manner with no toxicity and low side effects has been a hot area at the forefront of hair loss research.

Shenzhen Sipimo Essence is based on the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, with modern technology to extract including ginseng, fallopia multiflora, angelica sinensis, aloe vera, flaxseed, green tea and other essential ingredients, combined with the optimal scalp absorption of the precise configuration of the scalp to achieve the care of the scalp, nourish the hair follicles, nutritional hair roots, hair loss has a very good effect on the improvement of the role of hair loss. Recently, Sun Yang's research team at Nanjing University's School of Life Sciences and State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology published a paper entitled Single-cell transcriptomics reveals the natural product Shi-Bi-Man in the international botanical medicine journal Phytomedicine (CAS 1). Using single-cell transcriptome sequencing technology combined with pharmacological validation, it reveals that Sipimo (also called Shi-Bi-Man) Essence can promote hair regeneration by increasing the number of hair follicle stem cells and dermal papilla cells and activating the FGF pathway in dermal papilla cellsproviding a mechanistic explanation for the use of traditional natural ingredients to promote hair regeneration.

 研究人员发现相比对照组,深圳诗碧曼精华液具有显著促进小鼠毛发生长的作用,毛发重量、毛发评分、毛囊数量、毛囊长度以及皮肤中与增殖相关的标志物PcnaKi67表达水平均有明显升高。

The researchers found that compared to the control group, Shenzhen Sipimo Essence significantly promoted hair growth in mice, with obvious increases in hair weight, hair score, number of hair follicles, hair follicle length, and levels of expression of Pcna, Ki67 markers associated with proliferation in the skin.

So what is the mechanism by which Sipimo Essence promotes hair regrowth?

研究人员借助单细胞转录组测序技术全面分析了诗碧曼精华液给药后皮肤中所有细胞的基因表达变化谱,并使用之前文献报道有促毛发再生作用的二甲双胍作为阳性对照。结果显示诗碧曼精华液给药后皮肤中毛囊干细胞和真皮乳头细胞数量显著上升。众所周知,毛囊干细胞和真皮乳头细胞对毛发生长至关重要。

Using single-cell transcriptome sequencing, the researchers comprehensively analyzed the gene expression profiles of all cells in the skin following the administration of Sipimo Essence, and used Metformin, which has been previously reported in the scientific literature to have hair regenerating effects, as a positive control. The results showed a significant increase in the number of follicular stem cells and dermal papilla cells in the skin after administration of Sipimo Essence. It is well known that follicular stem cells and dermal papilla cells are essential for hair growth

单细胞转录组测序揭示诗碧曼精华液可增加毛囊干细胞和真皮乳头细胞数量

Single-cell transcriptome sequencing reveals that Sipimo Essence can increase the hair follicle stem cells and dermal papilla cells.

进一步分析单细胞转录组测序数据,研究人员发现在诗碧曼精华液涂抹后真皮乳头细胞中FGF7表达升高,随后通过对小鼠皮肤切片进行免疫荧光实验证实了该现象。因此,诗碧曼精华液可通过促进真皮乳头细胞中FGF7的表达促进毛发生长

Further analysing the single-cell transcriptome sequencing data, the researchers found that the expression of FGF7 in dermal papilla cells was elevated after the application of Sipimo Essence, which was subsequently confirmed by immunofluorescence experiments on mouse skin sections. Therefore, Sipimo Essence may promote hair growth by boosting FGF7 expression in dermal papilla cells.


研究人员随后通过UPLC/MS检测诗碧曼精华液中的主要成分,发现有表没食子儿茶素没食子酸酯(EGCG)、二苯乙烯苷(TSG)、表儿茶素没食子酸酯(ECG)、没食子儿茶素没食子酸酯(GCG)、人参皂甙等成分,并发现TSGEGCG也可通过促进真皮乳头细胞中FGF7的表达以促进毛发再生

The researchers then examined the main ingredients in the Sibiman Serum by UPLC/MS and found that there were epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), tetrahydroxy stilbene glycoside (TSG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), gallocatechin gallate (GCG), and ginseng saponins and found that TSG and EGCG could also promote hair regrowth by promoting the expression of FGF7 in the dermal papilla cells.


TSG and EGCG, the main monomer components of Sipimo Essence promotes hair growth by boosting FGF7 expression in dermal papilla cells.

综上所述,该研究利用单细胞转录组测序技术结合药理学验证,揭示了诗碧曼精华液及其活性成分TSGEGCG可通过增加毛囊干细胞和真皮乳头细胞数量,并激活真皮乳头细胞中FGF通路促进毛发再生,为传统天然成分组方而成的诗碧曼精华液促毛发再生提供了科学依据

In summary, the study used single-cell transcriptome sequencing technology combined with pharmacological validation to reveal that Sipimo Essence and its active ingredients TSG and EGCG can promote hair regeneration by increasing the number of hair follicle stem cells and dermal papilla cells and activating the FGF pathway in the dermal papilla cells, thus providing a scientific basis for the hair regeneration of the Sipimo Essence, which is made from the combination of traditional natural ingredients.
